The Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department Key Statistics of Women and Men in Hong Kong released on July 28 shows that in 2010, the proportion of women in Hong Kong's population stood at 3,757,300, and that of men at 3,310,500. This translates into a gender ratio of 881:1000.

The Hong Kong sex ratio dropped from 1087:1000 in 1981 to 912:1000 in 2006. Women now have the clear demographic majority.

This is partly attributable to the many one-way permit holders coming to Hong Kong from the mainland, and the large numbers of international migrant women domestic workers in the SAR.

There are more women than men among one-way permit holders because many Hong Kong men have mainland wives.

As more Hong Kong residents are staying longer in education and starting work later, the marriage age of both men and women has risen. In 1981, the average age of women's first marriage was 23.9, and in 2010 it was 28.7. Men's average age of first marriage in 1981 was 27, which in 2010 rose to 31.2.

Statistics also show that the average age at which women gave birth in 1981 was 25.1, and that in 2010 it had risen to 29.9. Divorce has skyrocketed over the same period: there were 2,062 divorces in 1981 and 18,167 in 2010.

The Hong Kong population is, moreover, aging. Between 1981 and 2010, Hong Kong's total population grew 36%, but that of residents aged over 65 rose 165%, of whom 139% are women and 204% men.
