The northwestern city of Lanzhou is set to launch an initiative to promote gender equality and a more women-friendly environment in 2012. The announcement was made by Deputy Governor of Lanzhou Ge Yinsheng, at a working conference on population issues on February 21, 2012.

In 2011, Lanzhou saw 28,211 newborns with a birth rate of 7.56%. According to Ge, the gender ratio was 104.61.

In addition, 164,400 women of childbearing age in Lanzhou received free health checkups and nearly 10,000 couples took part in pregnancy health checks.

To enhance the quality and comprehensiveness of the childbearing population, the initiative will provide services on child policy, reproductive health education and pregnancy health checks.

Included in the program are women of childbearing age, newly-wed couples and the migrant population.
