According to a recent survey by the United Nations Population Fund on domestic violence in China, about 84.1% of female domestic violence victims have sought help from their social networks to no avail.

Although certain laws address the issue, including the Marriage Law of the People’s Republic of China and Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women, China does not as yet have clear anti-domestic violence laws. There are also less than 10 social organizations which focus on the issue.

The survey also reveals that although providing professional help has proven to be effective, the majority of victims choose to keep silent about their abuse.

Anti-domestic violence activist Feng Yuan admits that although China has made great progress in legislation against domestic violence, there is still far to go before the situation improves.
