Title: China Vows to Resolve Gender Imbalance
Release Date: April 11, 2012
Keyword: gender imbalance, china, guidelines

China's State Council  issued guidelines on Tuesday to solve the country's growing gender imbalance and promote gender equality within the next few years.

In order to bring the gender ratio to within 100/115, the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15) on the country's population development puts forth several proposals.

China will continue to adhere to the fundamental principle of gender equality, working to raise public awareness on the issue and invalidating regulations that involve gender discrimination. More preferential policies will benefit families with girls, and increased social welfare activities such as the Spring Bud Project, which helps rural girls stay in school, will be launched.

Relevant regulatory policies will also be implemented to secure women's legal rights and better protect children's interests. There will be a severe crackdown in human trafficking and other illegal activities that involve the violation of women and children's rights. Practical measures will also be introduced to help children resolve daily life difficulties.

The regulation of newborn gender imbalance ratio will be managed through cooperation between the central and local governments. Relevant governmental branches will be required to carry out their responsibilities in promoting gender equality and helping resolve the gender imbalance issue.

Severe measures will also be taken to crackdown on non-required fetal gender identification and sex-selective abortion.
