The National Bureau of Statistics released the 2011 Survey Report on Migrant Workers in China on April 27, 2012 revealing that the number of migrant workers in China reached 252.78 million last year, an increase of 10.55 million people from the previous year.

Amongst them, male migrant workers accounted for 65.9% and females 34.1%. Statistics also show that the number of migrant workers from the country's midwest region is growing faster than that of the east. The ability of the midwest to absorb migrant workers has also strengthened, in comparison to the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions which have experienced a gradual decline. With the rapid development of the midwest, the level of migrant workers'  wages in the region has become nearly the same as in the east.

In 2011, the number of migrant workers leaving their home provinces grew less, breaking the normal pattern. Most migrant workers reached a junior middle school level of education and are employed in the manufacturing, construction and service industries, with the proportion of those in the construction industry having increased significantly. The employment stability of migrant workers has also gradually improved.
