China is ranked 69th in the worldwide Gender Gap Index, according to a report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 24, 2012.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2012 ranks 135 countries on their ability to close the gender gap in economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment, covering over 93 percent of the world’s population.

China did comparatively well in terms of women's labor participation, but was negatively affected by the lower index of health and survival that was due to the birth ratio imbalance. Japan and South Korea were ranked in the 101st and 108th places respectively.

Iceland topped the index, with high marks in women's education and political empowerment, followed by Finland, Norway, Sweden and Ireland.

The United States slipped from 17 last year to 22 this year, owing to the lower ratio of women's political empowerment.

Among the South American countries, Nicaragua ranked the highest at number nine.

Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, said that narrowing the gender gap is not only related to equality between men and women, but is also a crucial way to ensure success and development in an increasingly competitive world.
