Professor Fanny M.C. Cheung gave a lecture in Beijing on December 19, 2014 on Hong Kong's experience in preventing sexual assault, a lecture that also featured the input and experiences of mainland China subject matter experts.

Professor Cheung — Vice-President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) — provided a comprehensive and in-depth analysis on Hong Kong colleges' efforts in fighting sexual assault and pointed out that sexual assault is a global issue, which requires concerted efforts from all corners of society in order for significant progress to be made in putting the issue to rest.

Professor Cheung further analyzed the legal definition of sexual assault in Hong Kong's Sex Discrimination Ordinance, pointing out that the definition covers people of all genders and orientations, both homosexual and heterosexual, and covers various degrees of sexual assault within the legal regulation.

Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) Tan Lin, who presided over the lecture, said that preventing and eliminating sexual assault is not only a matter concerning society as a whole but also one concerning individuals' ideological and moral development.

Tan, who also serves as president of the Women's Studies Institute of China (WSIC), said that China has already adopted a number of relevant policies and regulations to tackle the issue on school campuses and in the workplace and that the issue demands all citizens to take on responsibility to contribute to its prevention and elimination.

The lecture was well attended, featuring such attendees as Professor Japhet Sebastian Law, former director of the CUHK's Faculty of Business Administration; officials from the ACWF's Organization Department and Legal Department; and experts and scholars from the WSIC, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Communication University of China (CUC).
