Among the registered population in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, the number of women has repeatedly outnumbered men, according to data recently released by the city's Bureau of Statistics.

As of the end of May this year, Shenyang has a registered population of 7.31 million, of which there are over 3.697 million women, while men just over 3.616 million, showing that women now outnumber men by over 81,000.

In addition, the sex ratio of the registered population in Shenyang has dropped to 97.8, hitting a 31-year record low.

Figures also indicate that the sex ratio in Shenyang has decreased again for the eighth consecutive year since 2008, according to local statistical bulletins.

Furthermore, results also show that in Shenyang the number of women is larger than that of men in the urban districts, while the situation in the outskirts is completely the opposite. For example, the female population in Huanggu District is 19,914 greater than that of men, followed by Heping District and Shenhe District. However, data shows that there are 9,316 more men than women in Faku County, the biggest gender imbalance across the whole city.

The decrease of the sex ratio is affected by women's longer life expectancy, an analyst said.

In Shenyang, there are 1.747 million senior citizens aged 60 or above in the city, and the average life expectancy of women is 5.63 years longer than that of men, according to the latest data released by the local Bureau of Statistics.
