Women's organizations have played a key role in uniting Chinese women to fight against Japanese aggression.

Through the establishment of women's organizations at all levels, the Chinese female united front against Japanese aggression provided a solid foundation for the development of the women's movement at the time.

1.Development of Women's Organizations at Anti-Japanese Bases of the Communist Party of China (CPC)

--The Central Women's Committee strengthened the leadership of female movements across the country.

The power of the committee was reinforced after an enlarged meeting held in Luochuan, northern Shaanxi Province, in 1937. About 18 months later, the secretariat of the CPC issued a Decision on the Development of Women's Work and called on all Party members to attach importance to female work. Since then, a great number of women's committees were established across China.

--Establishing various women's organizations so as to unite Chinese women at all levels.

A large number of women at anti-Japanese bases participated in the associations for national salvation and women's federations, laying the foundation for women's movements, as well as the establishment of a women's united front against Japanese aggression.

2.Development of Women's Organizations in KMT-Controlled Areas

--Women's organizations led by the Kuomingtang (KMT) made further development. As of May 1938, relevant women's groups had reached 105.

--The Wartime Child Care Association of China was established.

3.Development of Women's Organizations Based on the Cooperation of the CPC and KMT

In order to call on all Chinese women to participate in the war against Japanese aggression, the Women's Guidance Committee arose at this historic moment, promoting the development of female movements.

More than 30 branches under the leadership of the Women's Guidance Committee played their key roles in wartime.

Therefore, the establishment of a Chinese women's united front not only provided strong support for the war of resistance against Japan and promoted the development of women's movements, but also played an active role in women's liberation.

The author is Researcher Jiang Xiuhua, assistant to Director of the Women's Studies Institute of China, affiliated to the All-China Women's Federation.
