An international symposium titled 'Historical Studies of Women and Gender from a Global View' was held in Shanghai from December 4-5 and its namesake publication was also released at the event, which is the first academic journal focusing on historical studies of women and gender in Mainland China.

In the narrative of traditional historiography, there are few themes talking about women, capturing the attention of some scholars at this conference. Such studies include Wet Nurses and Nannies in Ancient Mesopotamia, written by Liu Changyu from Zhejiang Normal University, and Xenophon's characters, -- Barbarian wives, written by Zhang Kai from Huaibei Normal University.

The narrative of traditional social and political history is another major theme at the symposium. Associate Professor Yao Fei, from Shanghai Normal University, discussed the parades on Women's Day in Shanghai from 1936-1951.

Associate Researcher Zhou Lei, from the Women's Studies Institute of China, affiliated to the All-China Women's Federation, talked about practices and explorations in women's liberation and improvement of rural family's relations in the period of the war of resistance against Japanese aggression.

With a large amount of image data, a professor from the Japan-China Friendship Association demonstrated Chinese female students' images in the late Qing Dynasty based on a journal called Picture Daily, which is also known as Tu Hua Ri Bao in Chinese.

Professor Du Fangqin, as one of the first batch of scholars who devoted themselves to the study of women's history, shared her opinion on the development of feminist oral history in China.

Organizers expected that the newly-released journal Historical Studies of Women and Gender could make a contribution to establishing a harmonious relationship between men and women and provide more opportunities for international academic communication and cooperation in historical research on women and gender.
