China released its top 10 pieces of news focusing on gender equality issues in 2016 during a news briefing on January 12 in Beijing.
This event was the fifth annual release ever since 2012 and it was jointly organized by the Institute of Journalism and Communication Studies under the China Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), newspaper China Women's News, and Women's News and Culture Foundation affiliated to the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF).
According to organizers, the headlines were deliberately picked out by an online poll and members of a judging panel, consisting of gender study experts, senior journalists and officials from the nation's major news media outlets. These include People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, Guangming Daily, Economic Daily News, Science and Technology Daily, Workers' Daily, China Youth Daily, Farmers' Daily, Legal Daily, China News Service, and China Women's News.
Judges' Comments
Sun Qianbin, chief editor of China Women's News, said: "This event has received more and more public awareness as its brand has grown bigger in recent years. This year's selection is based on similar principles to the past, majorly focusing on four aspects – gender relevance, social influence, policy effects, and news novelty. It aims to promote gender equality as a mainstream issue and further incorporate it into a priority concern during policy-making procedures."
Tang Xujun, chief of the CASS's Institute of Journalism and Communication Studies, commented: "As a member of the judging panel, I was cautious about selecting the news. Gender equality issues still need to be improved across the country, even though our society has progressed a lot in the field ever since the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Hopefully, this selection event can promote its further development in a more focused way.
Lu Xiaofei, executive director of the organizing committee of Women's News and Culture Foundation, believes: "Some candidate news sheds light upon China's national policies and laws on gender issues. Also, there are reports about grassroots innovative initiatives and other cases in such aspect. We judges are responsible for promoting such issues across the country, and sometimes the comparison between China and foreign countries can be made from the perspective of gender issues."
"This selection event is different from others in that we are encouraged to understand social changes, promote social congress, and guide people with correct public opinion" added Lu.
