The Specialized Committee for Girls' Protection was set up on March 22 in Wenzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, and is the first social organization established to focus on girls' protection across the province.

In recent years, incidents of sexual assault against girls (with some incidents also involving male victims) are repeatedly reported in newspapers or on the Internet. According to statistics, the largest group of victims of sexual assault are pupils, especially those aged from seven to fourteen.

Due to an absence of education against sexual assault in primary schools, the rise of organizations related to girls' protection is becoming increasingly necessary.

The Specialized Committee for Girls' Protection aims to enhance the awareness around the protection of children across society, promote the development of theoretical research and practice of children's physical and mental health and provide suggestions on children's protection for the government.

In addition, the committee plans to strengthen communication and cooperation with other children's protection agencies and organizations at home and abroad, with a view to reducing incidences of child abuse.

Over 10 experts and professionals in the fields of education, medical treatment and media are employed as mentors of the organization.

The committee was also announced as a group member of Wenzhou Women's Federation at the opening ceremony.

Furthermore, under the leadership of Wenzhou Women's Federation, the committee also launched a series of training classes of education on girls' protection for local students.

The project group also plans to publicize knowledge on girls' protection in remote regions, especially for ‘left-behind' children, whose parents have left them behind in rural areas of China to seek better jobs in the cities.
