The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) hosted an awards conference on March 31 in Beijing to honor advanced individuals and groups safeguarding women and children's rights and interests.
The conference was part of efforts commemorating the 25th anniversary of the country's promulgation of the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women (LPRIW).
On behalf of the ACWF, Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and ACWF president, delivered a speech at the meeting.
Government's Great Attention
In her speech, Shen noted that since the convening of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the CPC central committee with President Xi Jinping as the core has attached great importance to women's comprehensive development and advanced this as part of China's all-round law-based governance strategy to protect women's rights and interests according to the law.
"General Secretary Xi Jinping has made many important expositions about safeguarding the rights and promoting the comprehensive growth of women, pointing out a clear direction for how to protect women's rights under the new situation," she said.
"We should build firm consciousnesses of the ideology, the whole, the core and the line [the 'Four Consciousness' first put forward by Xi at a conference of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on January 29, 2016]; let the spirits of General Secretary Xi's important remarks guide our work; and, learn the great significance of protecting women's rights from a political height."
She also urged attendees to strengthen their ideological and action consciousnesses, and let grassroots women unite closely around the CPC central committee through solid services and make new contributions to building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
Recalling Achievements in Protecting Women's Rights and Interests
During the conference, Shen reviewed the great achievements made in protecting women's rights, interests and causes under the rule of law.
"Under the strong leadership of the CPC central committee and concerted efforts of Party committees and governments at all levels, relevant departments and people from different sections of society, the national policy of gender equality has taken root in people's hearts, and the LPRIW have been fully implemented," she said.
"With continuous improvements of legal systems, policies and measures concerning women, their rights and interests in aspects such as health, education and social security have been further guaranteed. Women's role in economic and social development becomes increasingly prominent."
Shen pointed out that women's causes in China have made brilliant achievements, with a collective rights-protection working situation "led by the party committee, supervised by the People's Congress, dominated by government, implemented by departments and participated in by society" being fostered fundamentally.
Meanwhile, she also reminded attendees that there were still many difficulties and problems confronting women's growth and rights protection partly due to historical and cultural influence.
"We should go from the height of safeguarding national political security and social stability, further strengthen our sense of responsibility and urgency and solve prominent problems with a stronger determination and actions, in a bid to better carry out women's protection work and stimulate women's enthusiasm and creativity of fighting for the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," she said.
Highlighting President Xi's Remarks
Shen called on attendees to take the spirits of President Xi's important remarks as guidance, implementing the LPRIW in an all-round manner to let women feel more sense of achievement and happiness.
"We should enhance publicity to create a positive social environment favorable for women's development," she said.
"We should also stick to a problem-oriented working method, grasping the concrete issues of most concern to women and focusing on solving striking problems existing in aspects such as marriage and family, labor and employment, social security, land rights and interests and personal rights.
"Meanwhile, we should strengthen social coordination and give full play to the advantages of the socialist system. Under the leadership of the Party committee, assorted roles of government organs, social groups, enterprises and rural and urban residents committees in women's protection work should be tapped."
Song Xiuyan, vice-president and first member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, presided over the conference, where 971 advanced groups and 977 advanced individuals were awarded.
Of them, six honorees from court, the public security bureau, civil affairs office, human resource and social security department, lawyer's association and women's federation shared their valuable experience of how they protect women and children's rights and interests in their respective posts.
Nearly 200 people attended the meeting, including leaders from the Committee for Internal and Judicial Affairs of the National People's Congress (NPC), the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People's Court, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, relevant experts, lawyers and representatives from social groups.
