Chinese President Xi Jinping has always paid much attention to citizens' voices and the well-being of the general population.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in late 2012, Xi has visited some 30 rural households across the nation's 14 most poverty-stricken areas to improve his poverty-alleviation plans.
Holding onto the belief of "seeing the needs of the people as his own," Xi pays visits to the homes of grassroots people each Spring Festival to see their real conditions and listen to their real needs.
Advocating "standing identified with the people," each time Xi inspects work in a region, he visits villagers to ask about their livelihood, explain policies and talks about a more prosperous future.
Such heart-warming visits and chats bring the government and ordinary households closer together.
When visiting Wang Zhiqiang in Huamao Village of Zunyi, southwest China's Guizhou Province, Xi said: "It depends on our fellow countrymen whether policies made by the central government are good or not."
"If villagers smile, that means our policies are good; if some people cry, we must pay attention and make improvements."
At the home of Xu Xuehai in Desheng Village of Zhangbei, north China's Hebei Province, he said: "Eliminating poverty, improving people's livelihood and realizing common prosperity are not only essential requirements of socialism but also an unswerving goal for the struggle of the Communist Party of China (CPC)."
"Every CPC official must have such a consciousness. As long as there is a family or a person whose basic living problems have not been solved, and as long as the happy day people long for has not come, we should never be slack at work and must unite people together and lead them to keep fighting," said Xi at the home of Guo Yongcai in Yiershi Town of Hinggan League, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Tang Zongxiu in her 70s from Luotuowan Village of Fuping, Hebei Province, said: "When President Xi visited my home, he was modest and easy to approach, as if a relative of mine had dropped by. He sat directly on the kang [brick or adobe bed], talked with me and went into the pig pen to help feed livestock."
Liu Jinlian from Liangjiahe Village of Yan'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, who used to rent a house to Xi, said: "When Jinping returned home, he treated people as amiably and warmly as before."
Huang Jumei from Tayuanzhuang Village of Zhengding County, Hebei Province, has one regret. She said: "When President Xi came to my house I forgot to pour him a glass of water. The next time he comes, I must make it up."
President Xi's heartfelt feelings for the people originate from his experiences of serving at a wide range of grassroots posts and from his positive family culture.
President Xi, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, started his political career from the most basic position – as a Party Branch secretary.
Xi's personal record has two main characteristics. He has worked almost all-round ranks and levels. He has worked as a leader at nearly every level and rank.
Secondly, his positions have been marked by widespread geographical locations. He has served in the country's western, central and eastern regions; in both villages and cities; and, in both backward and prosperous areas.
Such rich experiences offered him an opportunity to make contact with those from the general population, providing a foundation for him to foster an intimate bond with the people.
Xi hails from a revolutionaries' family whose positive culture exerts a great influence over him. Xi's father Xi Zhongxun said to him many times, "Whatever a high-ranking position you are at, always remember to serve the people earnestly, show true concern for them, contact the masses and be easy-going."
Xi bears his father's words firmly in mind. In his 2017 New Year Speech, Xi expressed his deep concern for the nation's disadvantaged people.
He said: "As we greet the New Year, there is one thing that remains most dearly attached to my heart. That is those fellow citizens who still live in hardship. I'm seriously concerned and wonder how their food supply and accommodation is being maintained, and how they are celebrating the New Year and the Spring Festival."
Over the past five years, great changes have taken place in the villages Xi visited.
Villagers said they want to share with President Xi the happiness of them shaking off poverty, moving to their new residence and building new roads.
They say: "President Xi, we'll continue to follow your leadership, roll up our sleeves and forge ahead bravely to help realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation!"
