The women's federation in Tiandeng County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has actively been promoting a series of workshops to alleviate poverty since last year.

Gloves-Manufacturing Workshop

Among those individuals who have been encouraged by the federation is local woman Huang Jingfang. Attracted by government-supported, preferential start-up policies, she migrated back to her hometown in May last year to establish a 300-square-meter production site.

For over a decade, Huang worked in the city of Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province. Nowadays, she is enthusiastic about her business which mainly produces construction gloves for export to developed countries.

"All the workers here are women whose ages are between 22 to 55, and 90 percent are from impoverished households in villages nearby," Huang said.

"The average monthly salary for each is 2,500 yuan (U.S.$ 380)."

The local women's federation issued a name plate to the site as a Women's Poverty-Alleviation Workshop to show their support. They also donated a slide which is set up in the open area of the factory.

The organization sponsored several recreational facilities for children to use at the site, aimed at protect safety of the youngsters during the summer vacation when their moms are still doing their jobs, said Luo Cuimei, president of the grassroots federation.

"Moms only can keep their minds on work when the safety of children is ensured," she added.

Shoe-making Workshop

Nong Meihua is another businesswoman who in 2016 founded a shoes manufacturing workshop in the local county of Jiaohui.

Nong was also from a disadvantaged household and received a subsidized microcredit loan worth 30,000 yuan (U.S.$ 4,560) from the government.

The workshop employs around 10 female workers to produce shoe surfaces. Nong is responsible for making the surfaces flat using special tools.

"I quit my job in Guangdong because I need to take care of my family in the village. My current order book is beyond what I can produce. I want to expand the business and inspire more households to shake off poverty," she said.

Promoting Poverty-Relief Workshops

The county has a total of 35 workshops, and has assisted over 960 women in finding jobs, said an official.

The county's women's federation implemented the Women's Poverty-Relief Action last year.

With the help of the county government's poverty relief office, the federation aimed to establish a long-term poverty alleviation mechanism to develop the handicraft industry among women.

The federation has carried out many initiatives to foster manufacturing workshops such as combining advantageous resources; introducing enterprises; and, increasing investment in both training and equipment.

In addition to manufacturing shoes and gloves, other workshops are specialized in making goods such as garments, electronic devices, and agricultural products.

The local government has made use of unoccupied spaces, including old school buildings or empty storage units, to set up more workshops and production sites.

Women can now find jobs close to their homes through five types of workshop such as livestock breeding, agriculture, travel and leisure, and sales.

The president of the grassroots federation said she is confident the organization can promote training workshops among 54 impoverished villages across the county in the next two to three years.

Moreover, the mechanism will help more women become capable of managing their own business and increasing household revenues, she added.
