China has accomplished or is close to achieving the majority of the targets outlined in the National Program for Women's Development (2011-2020), according a report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on October 27.

The report shows that steady progress has been made to improve women's employment. In 2016, the proportion of women employed nationwide was 43.1 percent, surpassing the anticipated objective by 3.1 percent.

The proportion of enterprises which have strictly abided by the Special Regulations on Labor Protection for Female Employees reached 73 percent in 2016, an increase of 18 percent in comparison with that of 2010. The rule has played a key role in the protection of women's legal rights and interests, especially those in relation to physiological needs in the workplace.

Women accounted for about half of the 120 million people who were lifted out of poverty in rural China from 2010 to 2016. Meanwhile, women constituted 38 percent of the total population nationwide in 2016 who were entitled to urban and rural minimum subsistence allowance and other financial assistance, an increase of 4.1 percent as compared to 2010.

Prominent progress has been obtained in the improvement of women's access to maternity insurance in the past few years. Statistics indicate that the total population of women under the coverage of maternity insurance rose to 80.2 million in 2016, growing by 49 percent in comparison with that of 2010.

Women enjoy broader access to basic pension insurance, unemployment insurance and industrial injury insurance at present. For instance, they made up around two fifths (39.3 percent) of the total population nationwide covered by basic pension insurance in 2016.

Moreover, the population of women with unemployment insurance saw an increase of 47 percent from 2010 to 2016, while the number of women covered by industrial injury insurance grew to 81.29 million in the same period.
