On Thursday, the Asia Foundation and SynTao Co Ltd, a leading consulting firm on corporate and social responsibility, jointly launched the report Impact of Domestic Violence on the Workplace in China at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Beijing.

The study's breakthrough is the paradigm shift from treating domestic violence not as a private, but as a public problem with negative financial implications for the employers.

The study found that domestic violence accounts for an average of 3.79 percent of a company's annual wage expenditure due to lost productivity, absence from work and employee turnover.

"According to the Domestic Violence Law enacted in 2016, employers have the responsibility to stop domestic violence," Ji Hongbo, the Country Representative from the Asia Foundation Beijing office said. However, only 52 percent of employers are aware of the enactment of the law. "There is great potential for workplace-based intervention, but it often fails due to a lack of evidence, research and awareness," Ji said.

The current research intends to support and encourage employers to take action against domestic violence.

A panel discussion on how to build a gender-friendly work environment featuring Guo Ruixiang from UN Women closed the event.

"We want to encourage companies to do more for gender equality," Guo said. "And to make sure both men and women benefit from the economic development."

Feng Yuan, a leading Chinese gender equality advocate and founder of the Equality NGO, said that it was important for companies to move from mei banfa (there's nothing we can do) to xiang banfa (think of solutions) regarding gender equality in the workplace.

"We can make things happen," she said.
