The Chinese Ethnic Minority Women Research Center of Minzu University of China in Beijing held a seminar on Ethnic Culture and Gender from November 25-26, attended by some 80 representatives from different regional groups.

Participants discussed the close relationship between gender mainstreaming, gender equality and ethnic cultural development.

Based on the 6th national population census, the population of female ethnic minorities in the country totals around 54.7 million. Research on ethnic culture and gender has the dual purpose of promoting gender equality and ethnic equality, said organizers.

Speakers commented that gender roles are closely related to the means of livelihood. However, cultural areas and economic issues should also be taken into consideration when it comes to the analysis of women's social status.

Minority women's folk culture, such as clothing, is diverse and wide-ranging. Along with regional languages, such traditions play a key role in ethnic history and identification.

The understanding of minority women's folk culture not only has great significance on the inheritance and development of ethnic cultures, but also has practical purposes for the understanding of women's special needs.

The diversification of ethnic culture research into gender studies is beneficial to the elimination of gender discrimination, experts added, whilst discussing several specific cases.

At the seminar, attendees reflected on how to facilitate minority women's development, discussed methods on women's capacity-building; and, how to strengthen regional educational investment and poverty alleviation.

Participants also discussed accelerating regional compulsory education development and improving vocational education and technical training.

Besides, abilities to use media, new media and Internet also have vital importance on improving ethnic minority women's quality of life and promoting related work, said researchers.
