In business, the average gap between male and female employees is 41.5 percent, and female employees almost always get smaller bonuses, according to the statistics released by the British government.

Social media giant Facebook has about 1,500 employees in the UK, with female employees receiving a bonus which is on average 60 percent less than their male counterparts.

However, 87.8 percent of male employees receive a bonus at Facebook, with the figure for females standing at 86.3 percent.

So why do the male employees have much higher bonuses than females?

Fiona Mullan, a HR Manager at Facebook, explained that part of the reason was that the company had more male employees in its engineering team. Besides, there are more male senior executives in the company.

"Facebook has tried to address this income inequality, by encouraging more female employees to make further studies in related skills," said Mullan.

"A fundamental solution is needed to tackle this problem, which a single company such as Facebook cannot accomplish," added Mullan.

"Facebook can hardly solve the difference between the number of male and female employees in various industries, particularly in technology. It is a social problem," she explained.
