The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) hosted a symposium on the theme of "Poverty Alleviation and Women's Economic Empowerment" for female leaders from countries in the Lancang-Mekong river basin regions with the support of Yunnan Women's Federation (YWF) on April 19.

Thirty female officials from five countries — Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam — attended the gathering.

Xia Jie, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF; and, Li Malin, Vice-Governor of Yunnan Province, in Southwest China, delivered speeches during the symposium's opening ceremony.

Others present included YWF President He Hongmei; YWF Vice-Presidents, Nongbu Yangzong, Ji Guanqin and Li Jiang; inspector Chen Jie; deputy inspector Wu Wanming; and,consul generals of the consulate generals of Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam in Kunming, as well as deputy secretary-general of the Women's Council of Cambodian. Mu Hong, Director-General of the Liaison Department of the ACWF, presided over the opening ceremony.

Strengthen Cooperation to Advance Women's Development

Xia welcomed the female officials from the five countries, and highly praised the positive results reached since the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism was established in 2016.

She stressed that General Secretary Xi Jinping has attached great importance to women's causes, and has put forward a series of new requirements for Chinese women's development for the new era.

Chinese women's causes have also experienced a historical revolution and gained remarkable achievements under the leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, Xia said.

"We would like to strengthen the cooperation with those women who live in the Lancang-Mekong river basin regions, to better improve the healthy and sustainable development of the LMC mechanism, better support international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and make new contributions in building a 'Community of Shared Destiny'," Xia said.

Furthermore, she introduced the efforts, made by women's federations at all levels in advancing women's employment, entrepreneurship and women's poverty alleviation.

Li said: "The People's Government of Yunnan has attached great importance to exchange and communication with those countries in the Lancang-Mekong regions. Our government established the provincial working mechanism to participate in the Mekong cooperation in June, 2016.

The holding of this symposium provided an opportunity to deepen the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism."

"We will continue to strengthen cooperation among countries and organizations in the Lancang-Mekong regions, with the Belt and Road Initiative as a bond. Furthermore, we will continue to strive for the development of the China-ASEAN women's development," Li added.

Soth Sithon, director of the economic development division of Cambodian Ministry of Women's Affairs, spoke on behalf of the attendees from five countries, expressed gratitude for the organizers and put forward a vision for communication and exchange among the countries be enhanced in the future.

Profound Connections with Neighboring Countries

The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism came about as a natural result of existing cooperation, close geographic proximity, traditional friendship, and complementary economies of relevant countries, said officials.

The mechanism is aimed at cultivating Lancang-Mekong culture featuring "equality, sincerity and mutual assistance." The YWF, based on its geological advantages, has positively developed communication with women's organizations in neighboring countries and engaged in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Highlight Chinese Women's Development

After the opening ceremony, Mu gave a lecture on the history and current situation of Chinese women's development; the Chinese Government's efforts for advancing women's development and ACWF's work.

He also gave a lecture on women and children's development in Yunnan and how YWF has promoted women's development.

The gathering, which lasted for 10 days, would further improve cooperation and communication among women's organizations in relevant countries.

Xia and other officials also investigated the women's federations' refaorm in Kunming and Qujing, including the construction of women's federations conducted online and the implementation of the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress.
