Sexual harassment still occurs regularly in workplaces in China, according to statistics released on April 12 by 1111 Human Bank, a recruitment company.

The findings indicate that some 50.7 percent of office workers in China have experienced workplace sexual harassment at least once, including 68 percent of female employees and 20 percent of men.

According to the statistics, some 44.4 percent of female workers choose to endure the harassment silently, which is 13.9 percent lower than their male counterparts.

Some 67.6 percent of sexual harassment relates to “intentional physical touching”, with 61.5 percent being verbal molestation, of which 60.6 percent happens in the offices and 24.7 percent happens in public places.

Also, some 33 percent of the molesters are the victims' colleagues on the same level, 22.7 percent are their bosses and 14.5 percent are their immediate supervisor.

He Qisheng, Vice General Manager of 1111 Human Bank, said: "In order to keep their jobs, those who experienced sexual harassment often choose not to say anything and keep a low profile."

According to the statistics on gender equality complaints cases released by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the People's Republic of China, the number of recognized sexual harassment cases is less than around 150 a year on average, indicating that only a few took the legal route to tackle the issue.

Therefore, He suggested that employees should protect their own rights and interests if they experience sexual molestation, by keeping records of video and photograph.
