The fifth China-UK High-Level People-to-People Dialogue (HPPD) and a series of its side events were held in London, the United Kingdom, on December 7, 2017.

Chinese Vice-Premier Liu Yandong headed a Chinese delegation during the dialogue, which she presided over. Xia Jie, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), accompanied Liu during the visit to UK.

At the invitation of UK Government Equalities Office, Xia headed a Chinese women's delegation to the UK, where they held the first China-UK Gender Equality Symposium, in collaboration with the UK Government Equalities Office. The symposium was a side event that highlighted women's issues under the China-UK HPPD.

The China-UK HPPD, established in 2012, is intended to enhance China-UK relations and deepen the countries' communications and cooperation in various fields. It is an important platform for China and the UK to improve mutual understanding and bilateral cooperation.

The fifth dialogue, held in December, formally incorporated women's strand into the HPPD mechanism. The ACWF and UK Government Equalities Office are the leading units of women's strand.

During the HPPD plenary, Xia and Justine Greening, then-Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities of the UK, delivered speeches on behalf of China and the UK, respectively. Witnessed by the HPPD presidents from both sides, Xia and Hilary Spencer, Director of UK Government Equalities Office, signed a memorandum of understanding between ACWF and UK Government Equalities Office.

The ACWF and the UK Government Equalities Office co-hosted the first China-UK Gender Equality Symposium at Southbank Center, in London, on December 7, 2017.

The symposium's theme was "Gender Equality and Women's Economic Empowerment." About 70 participants attended, including leaders of women's institutions in China and the UK, experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and media representatives.

During her stay in the UK, Xia met Joanna Roper, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Special Envoy for Gender Equality. The Chinese delegates discussed their work experiences, related to women's issues, with representatives from the Confederation of British Industries, British Women's Business Council, British Professional Women's Association, European Women's Lobby's British branch office, the Royal Institute of International Affairs and related nongovernmental women's organizations.
