The Second China-EU Symposium on Gender Equality, sponsored by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and European Women's Lobby (EWL), in collaboration with the Shanghai Women's Federation, was held in Shanghai on November 14, 2017.

Liu Yandong, Vice-Premier and Director of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, and Tibor Navracsics, EU (European Union) Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, attended and delivered speeches. Xia Jie, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, presided over the event and delivered the keynote speech.

Xia explained comprehensively the Chinese Government's measures to advance gender equality and women's development, and to promote women's entrepreneurship and employment. She shared ACWF's good practices in implementing the state strategy on mass entrepreneurship and innovation, and the federation's initiative for promoting women's entrepreneurship and innovation.

She noted approximately 900 million women, or a quarter of the world's population of women, live in China and EU countries. She called on women in China and the EU to join hands and advance gender equality and women's development, and to build a more inclusive and vigorous future for China and EU countries.

EWL Executive Member Annelies Pierrot-Bults said gender equality represents both an essential principle and a goal for EU countries. She said countries within the EU have already issued policies to promote women's empowerment; however, women are still overloaded with family chores, they have difficulties in work&life balance and they do not receive equal pay for equal work, as compared with their male peers.

She said EU countries hope to deepen cooperation with China and share good practices to ensure women participate equally with men in decision-making and various social issues, so that women would achieve development and equality in an all-round way.

As part of the activities of the Fourth Meeting of the China-EU High-Level People-to-People Dialogue, the symposium highlighted the theme "Live Your Dream, Share Your Life." Participants discussed supportive policies and measures to advance young women's entrepreneurship and employment, and to help young women balance their careers and family lives. About 150 participants attended the event, including officials from the State Council of China, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shanghai Municipal People's Government and related government institutions, as well as diplomats from the EU delegation to China, European countries' consulates in Shanghai, the EU Commission and EU External Action Office, representatives from women's institutions, scholars, students and women entrepreneurs.
