Chinese online travel agency Tuniu recently released its 2017-2018 White Paper on Outbound Tourism and Consumption, indicating that more young nationals travelled abroad in 2017 than ever before and with higher consumption standards.

According to the statistics, the number of Chinese traveling abroad reached 130 million in 2017, up seven percent from the previous year.

Some 33 percent of travelers were younger than 25; 38 percent of them were between 26-35; those from 46 to 55 made up only four percent; and, nine percent were over 55.

Meanwhile, some 11 percent of overseas consumption came from under 25s; 56 percent was from those 26 to 35; eight percent was from those 46 to 55; and, over 55s accounted only for 2 percent.

The top three consumption choices were shopping, accommodation and catering. Besides, art investment, education and advanced medical services also caught the attention of outbound travelers.

According to the results, consumers in eastern and southern China were the main drivers of outbound tourism and overseas consumption. Meanwhile, rapid growth has been seen in central and western regions.

Also, the top 10 popular destination countries were Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, the U.S., France, Russia, Maldives and Malaysia.

Besides, the number of those who choose a self-funded outbound tour was gradually rising in 2017.
