The 10th Straits Forum on Women took place in the city of Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, on June 6.

The forum was organized by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) in partnership with Fujian Women's Federation, Xiamen Women's Federation, and the Taiwan Chinese Women's Association.

Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and president of the ACWF, attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

More than 300 representatives from the mainland and Taiwan, and Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions attended the event which was held to help promote integration and exchange among women, and achieve consensus on development.

As one of the branded events and a unique project to promote the non-government exchanges, cooperation, and development, the forum has been successfully held annually for over a decade.

Since 2014, the event has hosted over 6,000 people from the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, according to statistics from Fujian Women's Federation.

The initiative has promoted the establishment of 42 women's cooperative development bases in Fujian and Taiwan and 44 children's exchange bases, resulting in bonding between 324 households of Fujian and Taiwan and 104 instances of cooperation between associations and enterprises.

Shen expressed warm congratulations on behalf of the ACWF to the opening of the forum, and extended her sincere welcome to all the attendees.

She said that the important forum has played an active and unique role in expanding and deepening women's exchanges, economic and social integration across the Strait, and promoting Chinese culture.

Shen said that the forum, with the theme "Green Families and Green Lives", shares the experiences and practices of women across the Strait in establishing environment-friendly families and promotes the development of ecological civilization. It helps women on both sides of the Strait take green development concepts into practice and build a better life.

Shen pointed out that building ecological civilization was a fundamental plan for the sustainable development of the Chinese nation. Since the the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core has attached great importance to environmental protection work.

Xi, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, has also repeatedly made important instructions on strengthening the building of ecological civilization and doing a good job in protecting the environment.

We must thoroughly study and implement Xi's thoughts on ecological civilization, and work together actively to contribute to a clean and beautiful world, said Shen.

Shen also emphasized that Xi's important thinking on the work of Taiwan was the basic principle for promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations under the new situation, which has clearly defined the objectives and directions for deepening cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation.

Women, who make up half of the population, are an important force in promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, playing an irreplaceable and unique role in promoting cross-Strait non-government exchanges.

In addition, Shen hoped that women of both sides of the Strait can increase their awareness of a community of a shared future for mankind, continue to be a strong defender and active promoter of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and jointly promote the outstanding traditional Chinese culture and boost confidence towards Chinese culture and Chinese nation.

Shen said it is important to make full use of the role of the forum, continue to carry out in-depth exchanges and cooperation with women from across the Strait, and implement 31 preferential policies for Taiwan, so as to provide more opportunities with better conditions for women's education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

These will enable women from both sides actively participate in the development of economic and social development and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation; and, fulfill the dreams of individuals and families in the process of realizing the Chinese dream, Shen said.

Shen also stressed that efforts should be made to implement the green development concept by strengthening exchanges and cooperation in the field of environmental protection, pollution control, garbage classification, and carrying out green commuting, to promote development of ecological culture.

Later, Shen met with guests from Hong Kong and Macao and hoped that they could adhere to the principle of One Country, Two Systems, to promote the unification of the country, and jointly contribute to the bright future of the Chinese nation.

Deng Li, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, presided over the opening ceremony.

In order to highlight the theme of this forum, some 150 female college students attended a cycling activity in the Haicang District of Xiamen on June 5 to greet the upcoming forum.
