China Youth Daily recently conducted an online survey among 1,968 parents to learn more about their methods of raising kids, and concluded that parents nowadays are paying too much attention to their children's material possessions.

Among the 1,968 respondents, some 88.8 percent of them were parents with one child, and 11.2 percent had two or more.

When asked why they attach importance to their children's standards of living, some 54.1 percent of parents said they would like to let their kids to have what they lacked when the parents were young.

Meanwhile, 48.5 percent said they wanted to provide the best material conditions for their kids; and, 45.5 percent said they are too excited to exercise proper restraint.

Meanwhile, some 34.2 percent said they buy toys for their children because they barely have the time to accompany them; 24.1 percent said it was because they can afford it; and, 22.5 percent said they are influenced by marketing.

However, as many as 86.6 percent of parents said they preferred to accompany their children rather than buy lots of stuff for them.

Some 61.6 percent of those polled said they would like to educate their children to treat others politely; 55.7 percent said they educate their kids to respect their seniors; 39 percent said they teach their children to establish a friendly relationship with other kids; and, 34.4 percent said they guide their kids to exercise and love nature.

Meanwhile, some 33.9 percent said they teach their children to be independent; 30.9 percent said they educate their kids to be conscientious; 30.5 percent said they cultivate their children's sense of the arts; 22.7 percent said they would like to take their kids to travel abroad; and, 20.7 percent said they hope their kids to grasp a foreign language in childhood.

Shu Man, executive president of the Education Department for Psychological Quality at East China Jiaotong University, said such behavior is guided by parents' mental projection.

"Parents can satisfy their inner needs and relieve their inner anxiety by providing kids with various stuff," said Shu.

"But this kind of providing helps little in children's growth. It may even cause negative effects on their personal character," added Shu.

Shi Longwei, a professor at Southwest University, suggested that parents should cultivate their children's sense of labor. "Besides, parents should spend more time with their kids to avoid their character deviation," said Shi.
