A volunteer multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) team provided free medical consultations for over 300 women and gave a science lecture on July 5 in Qijiang People's Hospital, southwest China's Chongqing, with 200 female staff members and breast cancer patients taking part.

The team was led by Ren Guosheng, a professor of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and director of the Committee of Breast Cancer Society of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA-CBCS).

The China Population Communication Center of the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China and the CACA-CBCS jointly hosted a public welfare program.

The program was initiated under the support of Roche, a pharmaceutical company in Shanghai, and aimed to care for rural impoverished women; provide training for grassroots normalized treatment of breast cancer; and, offer health education for women.

Improving Women's Health

Due to the vast territory of China and the uneven development of medical resources and services, women in remote areas have a weak awareness of breast cancer prevention and there is a big difference in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in different regions and in urban and rural areas.

Professor Ren said it is important to improve primary-level medical and health care institutions' abilities to treat breast cancer; strengthen health education; and enhance local citizens' consciousness of cancer's early detection and treatment.

In order to standardize the treatment of breast cancer and cultivate women's awareness of "early detection, early diagnosis, early treatment," the CACA-CBCS planned to organize a regularly volunteer multidisciplinary medical team to carry out relevant activities from 2018 to 2020.

The team, consisting of national well-known experts and young and middle-aged doctors, will offer basic-level medical training lessons and carry out health education in 20 remote poverty-stricken areas.

It aimed to enhance the level of primary-level medical and healthcare services as well as improve rural women's health.

Enhancing Primary-level Medical Service

The volunteer team led by Professor Ren carried out a series of activities, including training lessons in the local hospital and help improving medical skills in light of actual conditions.

"The team gathered multidisciplinary experts that are closely related to breast cancer's diagnosis and treatment," Ren introduced.

"Oncotherapy pertains to many diseases and it is better to absorb relevant doctors such as surgeons, physicians, radiologists and ultrasound doctors to form an MDT model," he added.

"The campaign has not only strengthened grassroots women's health awareness but also improved local medical staffs' ability through a series of academic exchanges," said Wang Jiang, director of Qijiang People's Hospital.
