Some 100 academics attended the second China Women Scholars' Forum on International Relations in Beijing on July 13, to discuss how to promote gender equality in the construction of a community of shared future for mankind.

The symposium, subtitled "A Community of Shared Future for Mankind and Women's Security" was hosted by the University of International Relations (UIR) with representatives from over 40 universities, research institutes and publishing groups.

The symposium followed a clear gender consciousness, broad vision and high professionalism, and was a significant event to promote research into Chinese international relations, said organizers.

Community of Shared Future for Mankind and China's Diplomatic Strategy

The idea of building a community of shared future for mankind has gradually gained recognition from the international community since it was put forward, and it has become a common set of values from which to promote the transformation of the global governance system and to build a new type of international relations and a new world order.

Participants paid attention to the theoretical challenges brought about by the new situation and discussed key issues at global, regional and national levels at the event.

Professor Liu Hui, secretary of the Party committee of UIR, analyzed the current changes in the field of international relations and said that the development of China's international relations has entered a new era.

She commented that changes require researchers to pay attention to international governance and build a theoretical system of international relations with Chinese solutions.

Liu stressed that women scholars in international relations should be confident. This confidence comes from the nation, the country and the team.

In addition, they should be confident because female elites can contribute unique wisdom to the study of international relations; women's research can add a different angle to studies; and, female researchers themselves can be role models for young women to learn from.

Gender Equality

The initiative to build a community with a shared future for mankind is China's contribution to global governance, and gender equality is an integral part of this program.

Du Jie, deputy director of the Women's Studies Institute of the All-China Women's Federation, believes that this initiative is bound up with women's development and gender equality.

Du said people should always consider the following questions when promoting the building of the community: "How to further promote gender equality?", "How to strengthen women's voice in tackling international affairs about gender equality?" and "How to show China's contributions in promoting gender equality?"

Li Yingtao, a professor of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy of Beijing Foreign Studies University, shared her thoughts on constructing a community of shared future for mankind through gender equality.

She said gender equality is the core principle of the community's establishment and it is an arduous progress. Women take part in and contribute to the construction of the community and they benefit from it, too.

China's Belt and Road initiative is also expected to help promote women's development and achieve gender equality, she added.

Furthermore, Kang Huanhua, a staff member of China Peacekeeping Police Training Center, analyzed the problems and challenges faced by UN involving women, peace and safety forces.

She presented UN's achievements such as its Resolution 1325 (on women, peace and security), its gender equality strategies and its Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict and also proposed some suggestions for the problems that remain in UN policies.
