Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning celebrated World Breastfeeding Week at the beginning of August to promote the construction of convenient public service facilities for infants and mothers.

Up till now, more than 4,000 facilities have been constructed in the capital, according to statistics. Breastfeeding rates in the city have also gradually improved.

In 2017, over 50 percent of babies aged under six months in Beijing were fed purely on breast milk, so it is important to provide places for mothers to nurse their babies at workplaces and in public venues.

The commission promoted facility construction in public venues including airports, railway stations, enterprises; and public institutions, with support from the municipal development and reform commission and Beijing Federation of Trade Unions.

Meanwhile, the local government will further promote breastfeeding as part of its childcare work.

As part of the latest reports, 114 medical institutions, including children's hospitals, were named as Baby Friendly Hospitals to disseminate the advantages of breastfeeding, teach feeding skills and help build up mothers' confidence.
