Four outstanding female role-models gave a speech at Wuhai Science and Technology Museum, in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on August 31 to share their personal experiences to eulogize achievements made in the new era.

The event, sponsored by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), the Communications Department of the ACWF, Inner Mongolia Women's Federation and Wuhai Women's Federation, saw the lecture hall packed with over 300 women from all walks of life.

Wang Chunlu, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Ice Hockey Association and member of the International Ice Hockey Federation, delivered the first speech. As early as 18, she participated in competitions in Norway, and has worked hard to prove her capability as a Chinese citizen after frequently being mistaken as Japanese or Korean.

She also mentioned her loss at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and retrieving the title in 2002 at Salt Lake City, which was the first gold medal China had achieved at the Winter Games. After studying abroad, Wang resolutely rejected a high-paid position and determined to go back and serve her home country, which greatly moved the audience.

Chen Jing, director and researcher at the Numerical Weather Prediction Center of China Meteorological Administration, relayed the speech via video and described her arduous journey of becoming an expert at predicting heavy rains.

Chen said in 1998, the Yangtze river was hit by the worst flood in a century, and the water level reached the limit of the embankment, which needed to be blasted to discharge the flood.

The then Premier Minister Wen Jiabao personally flew to Jingzhou, central China's Hubei province, to hold a forecast meeting to decide whether or not to blow up the dike so as to diverse the flood.

As the chief of the medium-term weather forecasting section, Chen predicted that in the next three days, there would be no heavy precipitation in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River area and conveyed the message to the flood control headquarters, which suspended the proposal and prevented any possible loss resulted from flood diversion.

"The 1998 forecast made me fully aware that a forecaster has a great responsibility and a glorious mission to protect people and our country. This year marks the 40 anniversary of the reform and opening-up implementation in China. And after working for nearly 30 years, I deeply feel that the reform and opening up has signally promoted the country's development, which has substantially supported China’s numerical forecast to be independently innovative and made it an essential force in international meteorology. Anyone who aspires to achieve success in his or her career needs to bravely face challenges," added Chen.

Another guest speechmaker was Wuyunsuyila, the secretary of the Party branch of Ejin Banner, in the far west of Inner Mongolia. She was chosen by local herdsmen as the secretary of the Party branch in her 30s in 1997, and has been serving on her post  for over 20 years to date. And over these years, the greatest asset for her is the deep trust and affection rewarded from those who she has been working for.

Though speaking with strong Manchu accent, she earned warm applause from the deeply-stirred audience after finishing her affectionate speech.

Gan Xiujin, the part-time vice-president of Wuhai Women's Federation and village secretary general of the Party branch, also gave an account of her working life of lifting disadvantaged women out of poverty.

This report was also broadcast live on the internet, drawing numerous netizens from across the country to watch it online.
