A group of experts on sociology, psychology and gender studies spoke at a training seminar in Beijing from August 15-19 to share their proposals on how to better manage marital relationships and cope with family crises.

The event was jointly organized by New Oriental Education and Technology Group and Beijing Association of Marriage and Family Studies (BAMFS), and drew the attendance of professionals from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and other leading higher educational institutes.

Throughout their lectures, several experts agreed that individualism has now become more important than the traditional family unit, affecting millions of households amid prominent social transformation.

Independence and self-confidence, along with the ability to accept personal weakness, are crucial to the maintenance of intimate relationships in a family.

Tong Xin, a professor from the Department of Sociology at Peking University and president of BAMFS, said social transformation has brought about huge changes among the public in terms of their lifestyles, personal values and ethics.

She explained that the training event was aimed to encourage members of the public to pay more attention to the management of their relationship and to extend support to each other.

Tong emphasized that the key to the maintenance of harmony and peace in a household is the building of a relationship with inclusiveness and mutual support.

Shen Yifei, director of the Research Center for Family Development at Shanghai-based Fudan University, noted that academics have already carried many studies over hot issues which include the division of family assets, the causes of quarrels between couples, the building of an intimate parent-child relationship, and operation of family-oriented sex education for children.

Shen added that the training has provided many researchers like her with an opportunity to popularize their academic studies.

Zhou Xiaopeng, a marriage expert, emphasized that individuals must learn to better manage their emotions, express personal demands, show their respect to differences, and allow their spouses to become mature if they want to maintain happiness and harmony.

Zhang Lixi, vice-chairperson of the Chinese Women's Research Society and former president of China Women's University, advised the public to focus their attention to the roots of quarrels between husbands and wives and the solutions to their conflicts, since it is natural for them to have trouble with each other in their daily lives.

Speaking about how to conduct sex education in families, Peng Xiaohui, a sexologist and retired professor from Wuhan-based Central China Normal University, explained that parents themselves must recognize the importance of sex education to youngsters' healthy growth, have a good command of principles as well as methods in the settlement of common problems in the process, and give more support to their kids whilst they are growing up.

According to organizers, they will hold a second, similar training seminar in October to benefit more families and children.
