The city of Quanzhou, in southeast China's Fujian Province, hosted an expo to coincide with the Cross-Straits Women's Art Festival on September 21 and promote cultural exchanges between women of mainland China and southeast China's Taiwan.

Quanzhou Women's Federation (QWF) President Zhuang Canxia, who is also secretary of the Leading Party  Group of QWF, presided over the opening ceremony. Over 300 people, including officials, business leaders and artists, attended.

Some 100 female artists, from both sides of the Taiwan Straits, displayed over 200 artworks (as part of the presentation), including ceramics, wood and jade carvings. Works of art play a significant role in the cross-straits cultural exchanges.

"The expo is a grand meeting, during which women from mainland China and Taiwan can promote friendship," QWF vice president Bao Fang said in her speech.

"I hope the women can make joint efforts to promote traditional Chinese culture, and create more works to enrich people's cultural lives," she added. In accordance with the requirements of Fujian Provincial Party Committee, Quanzhou is striving to improve its urban construction and promote its social, economic and cultural development.

"To make new achievements, we must rally more strength and encourage women to play their role of holding up 'half the sky'," Weng Zugen, Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of the Quanzhou Municipal Party Committee, said.

"Government officials at all levels should implement relevant government policies, to cultivate more female artists, and create a more favorable environment for women to improve their artistic skills, so they can create more crafts to increase their incomes," he added.

Weng also urged local women's federations to use the expo to help women find jobs or start their own businesses, and alleviate poverty by creating crafts.

"I hope women can promote the 'craftsmanship spirit,' and promote exchanges between women of mainland China and Taiwan," she said.
