The 2018 International Conference on Gender Equality and Corporate Social Responsibility, themed "New Economy, New Opportunity," was held in Chengdu, capital city of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on November 22.

The conference was jointly hosted by UN Women, Chengdu New Economic Development Commission and Chengdu Women's Federation.

The annual conference was initiated by the China Office of UN Women in 2015.

It aims to jointly discuss issues related to gender equality, corporate social responsibility and economic development, and promote the creation of a more equal workplace environment by gathering representatives from concerned government departments, enterprises, academia, social organizations, media and other relevant parties.

Previously, the conference has successfully held three sessions in Hangzhou, Beijing and Shenzhen respectively.

According to the data released at the conference, the number of women employed in Chengdu is 4.37 million, accounting for 47.6 percent of the total population employed in the city.

Chengdu women's enthusiasm for starting up businesses ranks third among all major cities in China, with the education level of its women further increased.

Moreover, women's health status has also been continuously improved. The standardization rate of maternal and child health care institutions in Chengdu has reached 100 percent; the rate of women's disease screening has reached 81 percent, and the average life expectancy of women has risen to 82.5 years.

"Overall, women's causes in Chengdu have maintained a leading level in the country," said an official from Chengdu municipal government.

The data was also endorsed by experts from UN Women.

Maria Guimaraes, an expert on strategic cooperation in the UN Women's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, said Chengdu's data performed well globally and the city sets a good example for others to follow in this regard.

Participants agreed that the new economy is more innovative, flexible and conducive to women's employment and entrepreneurship.
