The provincial women's federation in northwest China's Gansu held a ceremony on November 20 to welcome two demonstration bases aimed at protecting women's rights and interests and fighting domestic violence.

The ceremony was co-organized by Lanzhou Women's Federation (LWF) and took place at a local women and children's activity center.

Li Juan, vice-president and member of the Leading Party Group of Gansu Women's Federation (GWF) presided over the event.

Zhou Lining, president and Secretary of the Leading Party Group of GWF, delivered a speech at the gathering.

With the guidance of the provincial government and support from relevant departments, the work carried out by GWF to protect women's interests has led to significant achievements in recent years, Zhou said.

The effort to safeguard women's legal rights has been strengthened in people’s minds, and social customs have been formed in terms of respecting women and supporting their causes.

In addition, the status of women is improving and women's rights and interests in politics, economy, culture, society and family are constantly being guaranteed.

However, problems still exist in implementing relevant laws. Some women whose interests have been violated are experiencing psychological problems and are unable to fit into society.

In order to solve these issues, more social workers with high quality and professional psychological knowledge should be united to serve women, said Zhou.

Zhou said the action to establish the two new bases was taken to study and implement the spirit of the important remarks made by President Xi Jinping when he met the new leadership of the All-China Women's Federation in November, as well as to protect women and children's legal rights and interests.

Such an action should also further the reform of women's federations, promote the in-depth integration of resources from the provincial and city level federations and accelerate the construction of a new work pattern concerning rights protection, added Zhou.

LWF President Liu Shiying and Liang Jianli, a lawyer and member of the legal service team at the provincial women's rights protection demonstration base, also delivered speeches at the event.
