North China's Hebei will expand its newborn screening project to babies born in all impoverished counties of the province by the end of this year, according to the provincial health commission.

The screening project is aimed at strengthening the comprehensive control of birth defects and lowering the rate of babies born with mental-impairments and hearing disorders in poverty-stricken areas.

Through the project, newborns from impoverished counties in Hebei will receive screenings related to hearing, phenylketonuria and hypothyroidism, the latter two of which are inherited metabolic diseases.

Besides, authorities will carry out various activities on health education to disseminate the importance and procedures of receiving neonatal screening among women who are preparing or are already pregnant.

In addition, efforts will be made to improve the screening network for hearing defects and inherited metabolic diseases.

Specific work includes gathering blood sample from newborns, testing samples and making diagnosis in the laboratory.

Since the project was launched in 2012, it has benefited over 87,600 newborns, thus playing a significant role in reducing the rate of birth defects and improving the health of women and children in Hebei.
