Women's federations at all levels in Huachi County, northwest China's Gansu Province, have made a determined effort to promote the construction of poverty alleviation workshops this year, which has already achieved significant results.

For example, a rural woman called Li Xiaoyan, from Wangjuzi Village, Huachi, has set up a professional farmers' cooperative to cultivate saplings.

As providing jobs for so-called "left-behind" women in the village has become a major concern for the local women’s federation, staff of the village federation talked with Li, and decided to offer free skills training courses to local women so as to enable them to work at Li’s cooperative. Up till now, some 56 female villagers have found jobs there, said officials.

At a sachet embroidery company in Huachi, official An Chunxia said that she provides training courses for impoverished female villagers so they can make paper-cutting and embroidery products at home during slack farming season.

This type of innovative women's workshop company with training bases has helped local women achieve flexible employment and thereby boost their incomes, according to officials.

According to Dong Fengling, president of Huachi Women's Federation (HWF), federations have helped impoverished women by developing demand for workers in local enterprises and promoting three models of poverty alleviation workshops, namely, cooperative-style, home-style and internet-style.

HWF has set up seven workshops involving seedlings cultivation, crop growing, handicrafts and e-commerce, most of which have been identified by relevant departments.

A total of 1,200 women have found jobs in such workshops, including 495 impoverished individuals, each of them earning around 1,500 to 2,500 yuan a month, said officials.
