Hong Kong high school teacher Kuang Haoning, filed a petition in May accusing the Ma On Shan Fung Yiu King Memorial Secondary School of violating the Sex Discrimination Ordinance. Kuang referred to her former employer's rule that women teachers wear skirts and not trousers to work. The school in question apologized and paid compensation to Kuang and agreed to review its Teachers' Dress Code.

The plaintiff, Kuang Haoning took up the post of a teacher at the Ma On Shan Fung Yiu King Memorial Secondary School in July 2007. Headmaster of the school Sun Lihua made a point of telling new teachers before the start of the new school year that women teachers were required to wear skirts to work. When Kuang Haoning wore trousers on her first day Sun summoned her and stated that her wearing trousers contravened school regulations. This was the first of several dressings down, often in front of students, that made Kuang feel threatened, anxious and under pressure to the extent that she resigned after three months.

Kuang's petition accused the school of impinging on her freedom of choice of clothing.

The plaintiff Kuang Haoning said last Friday in a public statement that she had suffered a nervous breakdown and lost 6 pounds in weight during the three months she worked at the school.

Hong Kong Equal Opportunity Committee said it would publish the case online for employers' reference and that it would respect the conciliation between the plaintiff and the school. Leaders of the Ma on Shan Fung Yiu King Memorial Secondary School have amended their dress code requirements according to the Committee's recommendations. The case has also motivated local employers to specify employee dress codes.
