China's Eighth National Women's Congress took place in Beijing from August 31 to September 5, 1998.
This Congress came at the end of 20th century -- a crucial period in China's socialist modernization and reform and opening-up. This great event signified the importance of the women's movement and its progress in the new century.

The six-day-session of the congress highlighted achievements relating to Chinese women over the previous five years, and outlined goals that Chinese women from all segments of society would try to meet over the coming five years.

Gu Xiulian, Vice-President of All-China Women's Federation, delivered a speech. The congress deliberated and adopted amendments to the Constitution of the All-China Women's Federation, and elected Chen Muhua as Honorary President, Peng Peiyun as President, Gu Xiulian, Basang (Tibetan), Shen Shuji, Kong Lingren, Xie Lijuan, Qian Yi, Wei Yu (Zhuang), Liu Hairong, Peng Gang, Liu Yazhi and Hua Fuzhou as Vice-Presidents.
