Shang Shaohua, member of the fifth session of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), called for more attention to gender-based campus bullying at this year's CPPCC annual session.

Gender-based violence refers to violence that is targeted at women and girls based on their gender, sexual orientation or socially constructed gender roles.

"Female students are more vulnerable to school violence, as well as sexual harassment and sexual assaults, while men lacking in masculinity are also regarded as targets of school bullying," said the political adviser.

According to a report by Beijing Common Language (whose Chinese name is Beijing Tong Yu), a community-based non-profit organization (NGO), more than 40.6 percent of students have suffered school violence due to their sexual orientation or socially constructed gender roles. Of which, 21.23 percent of respondents said verbal attacks exist on campus and 16.37 percent of students said they are treated coldly or isolated due to their gender temperament or sexual orientation.

Moreover, according to another report by Guangdong Common Language, up to 77 percent of young students have encountered campus violence related to gender, sexual orientation or gender identity at least once.

Shang suggested the relevant departments integrate knowledge related to gender equality and multiple sexes into anti-campus violence education, raising students' consciousness of respect and gender equality.

In addition, the adviser also appealed to the authorities to carry out relevant training classes for teachers and parents, with a view to protecting students from school violence.
