Author: Luo Xiaoge

Mo Yan's novel,Frog, has successfully portrayed the image of the 'Auntie',a country doctor of gynecology and obstetrics who has worked for nearly 60 years. This thesis tries to analyze the Auntie's image fromthe perspective of gender theories, and make a social and historic analysis of the text.It points out that the Auntie's character is set against a typical background and her tragic fate is that of a typical character. The Auntie's resistance against the preference of boys over girls, her self-consciousness and participation in reforming society and her responsibility towards her work can be called 'the red legacy' of Chinese women's liberation. The Auntie is not a simple positive or negative stereotype, but one of a complex Chinese liberated woman.
