Issue No. original: No.2, 2013
To the Lighthouse is one of the most well-known works by British writer Virginia Woolf. In it,Mrs.Ramsay, the protagonist,is generally considered the victim of a patriarchal society and a typical symbol of the loss of the female self. However,it could be argued that in fact,Mrs.Ramsay has gone beyond the traditional roles of wife and mother, leading to the transcendence and sublimation of her as a female.Based on contemporary feminist theories, this paper interprets Mrs.Ramsay’s conventional beauty as symbolic of her role as an 'angel' in the home and as a mother. It reveals the author's hopes to establish an image of the female as self-sufficient and open.
