Author: WANG Lei
Keyword: Calendar posters, consumerism, modern imagination in China
Newspapers published: Journal of China Women's University
Issue No. original: 2013 (6)
This paper discusses the calendar posters published in the early 20th century in the Republic of China, gives an outline of the development history of the calendar posters, and discusses the relationship between the contents of the paintings, people and the goods. This paper argues that the calendar posters combine traditional Chinese culture and modern Western civilization, demonstrate the East-West cultural conflict in Chinese society, and display a landscape of the diversity of values in parallel. Not only does it promote a concept of modern consumerism, but it also outlines the modern Chinese imagination of the early 20th century Chinese society.
