Abstract:
Masculinities of the Chinese working class are experiencing tremendous transition as a result of the interaction with various social forces including regimes,class,gender,unit-system and intergenerational relationship during the past three decades of the social reform. The male workers of large state-owned enterprises have degraded from the glorious "oldest sons of Republic's industry"of 1960s to 1980s to the current ones who are painfully enduring the class trauma. They lost their former superiority in image, salary and social welfare,as well as their next generation's privilege in employment. At the same time the next generation tries to escape from the working class' school, which they are expected to internalize the working class' masculinity. The gender hierarchy has provided the male working class with a limited compensation for the class trauma they have suffered. Women have been marginalized in the reconstruction of working class.
