Abstract:  
Midwives held long-term legality in the Ming and Qing societies, and it is certified they served for royal courts and local governments. Since the inception of modern China, midwives have encountered questioning and challenges in many fields, but they also had legal status and were employed by the government, which can be proved from local acts and archives. It's indicated that midwives maintained their legality from 14 th to 20 th century China.
