Summary: 2015 is the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995. China and UN Women jointly held a high-level women's summit on September 27, 2015, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, with the title "Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: A Commitment to Action". At the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a four-point proposal on women's rights worldwide that included: striving for women's development in tandem with social and economic progress; protecting women's rights and interests; jointly building harmonious and inclusive societies; and fostering a global environment conducive to women's development. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also gave a speech at the opening ceremony of the event, and called upon world leaders to commit to securing true gender equality. Around 100 representatives, including 80 heads of state and government, attended the Global Leaders' Meeting where they exchanged views on the issue of global women's development, reaffirming that gender equality is a precondition for social development. For reference, the briefing published the full text of President Xi's speech, and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's oration, as well as commitments on gender equality and women's empowerment from other 87 countries across the globe.
