Summary: The UN Commission on the Status of Women opened its 60th session on March 14 at UN headquarters to discuss how to advance the gender goal included in the world's sustainable development roadmap in a bid to better empower women and girls. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that the world is full of inequalities and injustices for women and girls when he addressed the opening of the session, saying "as long as one woman's human rights are violated, our struggle is not over." Mogens Lykketoft, president of the General Assembly, said though progress on women empowerment is little, the sustainable development goals adopted last year can direct the international community towards a future where "men and women, boys and girls, enjoy equal opportunities and full equality in a sustainable world." Representatives from member states, NGOs, private sector and activists have met to discuss how to ensure women's and girls'rights are at the forefront of their plans to implement the sustainable development agenda. The Commission on the Status of Women was established in 1946 as an exclusive inter-governmental body to promote gender equality. With its priority theme being "women's empowerment and its link to sustainable development", it focused on the implementation of the ambitious sustainable development agenda which vows to end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere by 2030.
