Main content: In 2004, Gu Xiulian, vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and President of the All-China Women's Federation, made the proposal to compile the century of history of the Chinese women movement. The All-China Women's Federation later set up the Century of History of the Chinese Women's Movement compiling committee, advisory committee and project group. Gu Xiulian headed the compiling committee, Chen Muhua and Peng Peiyun, honorary president of the ACWF, served as advisors. Chen Xiurong, vice president of the ACWF, was the project group leader. Deputy leaders included Tan Lin, director of the WSIC; Wang Simei, deputy director of the General Office of the ACWF; and Xiao Yang, director of the History Research Office of the WSIC. After being expounded and proved by the group, The Century of History of the Chinese Women's Movement from 1901 to 2000 was listed as one of the key projects of the National Fund of Social Sciences.

The 20th century is an important historical period in the Chinese women's movement, as it was during this time that it started and developed. The formation of both a characteristic model of the Chinese women's movement and path of women's liberation has accumulated abundant spiritual wealth for the revitalization of Chinese nation. Sticking to the principle of "views coming from historical facts" and "combining demonstration with history", The Century of History of the Chinese Women Movement -- a combination of chronicle research and thematic historical research -- reproduces this magnificent historical process with the aim of providing reference material for present and future women's work and women's development and exploring the historical experience and objective laws of the women's movement.
