The female role in sports films is equally one of significant topic worthy of discussion but still lacking examination. Queen of Sports (1934), Woman Basketball Player NO.5 (1957) and Sha Ou (1981) are exemplary films that have developed a portrait of female figures in the history of Chinese sports films. This paper chooses these films to reveal changes in distinct portraits of female roles in three different historical periods of Chinese sports film making, especially from a perspective of the interplay of multiple viewing, physical training and disciplining and the consciousness of femininity and gender roles.
