Based on survey data from 2696 farm households and 153 farm household that have participated in in-depth interviews in a county in Northeast Sichuan Province, this paper examines gender differences in household members' encounter of risks of major illnesses, and intra-household labor supply during the attacks of major illnesses. The paper especially discusses cases to reflect intra-household female labor supply during the attacks of major illnesses. The findings show that the female household members are more likely to be attacked by major illnesses, while at the same time they still engage in household income generating activities and looking after other members of the household who are ill. The paper discusses the reasons of these gender differences in intra-household labor supply as it also proposes policy interventions in the conclusion.
