Security of Rural Women's Right to Land
Source:Chinese Women's Research Network | Release Date:2010-8-19
Keyword: women's right to land, security of land holding
Author: SHANG Chun-rong

The security of land holding is determined by the relative strength of land holding rights, the time in which the land rights last and the security of the land rights. Women's land rights are often insecure; compared to men's, women's land rights are even more insecure. The insecurity of women's land holding is reflected in the three passages for land access: inheritance, distribution of village land and land markets. Women's land rights can be secured by the fixed position of land resources when land rights exchange is underdeveloped, mobility of women's marriages, collective ownership of land and women's vulnerable positions, as well as macro factors that affect village land management and the characteristics of the village collective.
